Coursebooks can be an invaluable tool to English language teachers. They provide tested approaches and practice techniques, as well as a tested course trajectory. Strict adherence to coursebook lessons and activities, however, is a disservice to English language learners. A great teacher will modify coursebook work to fit the needs of his/her particular learners and will consistently provide access to supplemental and authentic materials for a more profound study.This unit covered the different teaching methods for second language instruction. It covered both the history and details of the different methods. This culminated with the description of ESA which took many of the best aspects of previous methods. The unit then went into great detail regarding what the ESA method entailed. This included a description of each letter in the acronym as well as ways the method can be practically applied within the classroom setting.
