My students are young beginners in ESL class. Sometimes I get mixed young beginners with absolute beginners because of the way an International school works. Many times, students join the class in the middle of the school year and it's hard to teach students of different abilities in one class. I agree with the technique of teaching beginners without speaking student's mother tongue. I had a student who spoke the same language as me and insisted that I speak Russian with her. She got angry, cried and yelled at me, \"Don't pretend that you don't speak my language!\" But with patience and time, she learned quickly and understood English.
