Passive voice is used as a way of emphasizing the object, not the doer. An example of this is: \"The test was completed at 5pm.\" Modals are a way of expressing politeness and certainty. Take the word \"could\" as an example. \"Could you please turn that down?\" is a polite way of asking someone to lower the volume. \"I could do that if you asked me politely\" is a way of expressing uncertainty. It's interesting how they are the same word -- I had never noticed that before. Finally, there are phrasal verbs, some of which are separable and others are not. \"He knocked her up\" and \"he didn't show up\" are all examples of phrasal verbs.
