Authentic materials are those that are already produced, and may involve reading or listening. Examples are newspapers, songs, poems, advertisements, and textbooks. Created materials are materials that are used as activities, and these can be used to supplement authentic material. A course shouldn't be based purely around a textbook, but a textbooks has uses, such as by providing an outline of a syllabus to go off of, having already been created and used by other students, and as a linear progression of knowledge being learned. However, it can be dry and not adapted for particular students. By using created materials, students can practice fluency and interact with each-other.
