I think that productive and receptive skills are equally important and as educators we should strive for equal balance. However, as an ALT I find that with some of the teachers I teach with, my role is limited to speaking and listening. In most cases, the teachers prefer that I work on accuracy instead of fluency. Of course, when I am tasked with unnecessary/excess amount of accuracy correction, students feel less confident to communicate with me. I have spoken with some of my co-workers and while some have been agreed to expand my role as an ALT, others are less inclined to do so. I would personally like to see and use more examples when providing students with receptive and productive skills.
