The progression of tests in a class/term is generally: placement, progress, diagnosis, practice, final (final test/exam usually being external). I would generally say that while the practice & final test are entirely for the student, the placement, progress, and diagnosis tests are key indicators to the teacher of the students? comprehension thus far. Therefore teaches should often give progress and diagnosis tests to ensure no students are falling behind. Also I have read from other sources that the biggest single indicator of a students final exam score is how many practice test they took preceding the final exam
