Modal auxiliary verbs are used before other verbs in a sentence to add more meaning. These include words such as can, could, might, may, should, will, would, must, have to, need to etc. There are used to express an obligation, possibility/probability, ability and advice. Some words are more emphatic than others, for example 'must' suggests more of a mandatory event where as \"might\" or 'may' carries less weight, is \"softer\". We can also speak in a passive voice and this is used in cases in which the doer of an action is not known, when the doer of the action is irrelevant or when we do not want to say who does the action. I am still somewhat confused with distinguishing one transitive phasal verb form from the other.
