I have learned that phonology of language is a generally overlooked, but vital component in teaching English learners in order to build confidence, understanding, and can help them in the development of their productive skills. By analyzing the intonation of a sentence, you can infer whether a statement is being made, or whether a reply is implied. Also, learning where to stress a sentence can be valuable in engaging the communication partner/partners and help to clarify a message/response.
The IPA alphabet is a great tool to help students become more familiar with phonetic rules such as sound changes, linking, and sound dropping. It can also give them a better understanding of how to utilize their dictionaries and not rely on a teacher to find answers.
