This unit focuses on the best methodologies for teaching. There are many different methodologies, and if a variety of them are used, they can be very effective. However, this unit prefers Harmer's methodology, ESA. ESA stands for Engage, Study and Activate. The engage phase uses drawings, videos, mimes, and real objects to get the students talking. This is a warm-up phase. The study phase encourages a higher level of thinking and focuses on pronunciation, spelling and word order. The activate stage encourages the students to use what they have learnt through role-play, debates, surveys and story-building. The ESA model can be used three different ways - the Straight Arrow, the Boomerang and the Patchwork methods. All methods start with the engage phase and end with the activate phase.
