I have always considered pronunciation to be very important when learning English. I was a bit taken back when I read how it was not a popular subject among English teachers. I have encountered many students trying to learn English and I noticed a common trend. Most of these students would find pronunciation to be a difficult area. In fact, I find pronunciation difficult in general when trying to master a new language. I experienced this while trying to pronounce certain Arabic letters. Indeed, a mouth diagram helped understand where the sounds were coming form. There were certain sounds that came from the back of the throat verses the middle. Then there were those letters that were pronounced with the top and bottom teeth closed and so on. Pronunciation should be included in the lessons, whenever possible.
