There are four past tense types of sentence. Past Simple ends in 'ed' or 'd' or was or were, and you have to memorize the irregular verbs. Memory games, fish, matching story telling can be used to teach this tense. Past continuos use was/were/ and add 'ing' to the verb. in this tense almost always some type of time reference, again use story telling of yesterday or writing and tell what your were doing at specific time. Past perfect you use 'had' plus the past participle. the action in the pasted should finish before another action started. Again use story telling by giving a situation and give a reason why the situation had happened. The last is past perfect continuous and you use 'had been' plus adding 'ing' to the verb. Here the action or situation in the past had been going on continuously up to the past moment we are thinking of it.
