As far as units go, this one is one of the most difficult to not only students, but also teachers. To be able to teach students intonation, stress, and phonetic symbols, the teacher must be extremely aware of the how and why. As far as intonation goes, one must always listen and be aware of how a sentence should sound (rise/fall, flat, etc.). The stress one places on words completely changes the meaning of a sentence, so one must be prepared to give the students plenty of information of why certain words are pronounced with this stress. The phonetic alphabet, as far as I can see, is one of the most difficult things. The only way to know it, is to memorise it, and if one does not know it completely, one should have a key to consult during these types of lessons. In conclusion, this is one unit that not only students should study hard, but teachers as well!
