There is a tremendous amount of debate regarding methods and their various proponents are able to demonstrate the efficacy of the particular ones they like. I suppose that some methods are suited better to some teachers' personalities, resulting in a more confident instructor with better results. What is not emphasized (and research is way overdue) is the fact that learner's also acquire language in their own particular ways, and these can also be mapped out and responded to. There is no right or wrong method; at the end of the day is the class dynamics that will determine acquisition and retention.
I found ESA remedial for myself, but I would also like to note that I already do virtually everything in the ESA sections in my classroom, though my preparation is not nearly as structured and some activities (role play for example) are simply ineffective in my classroom environments.
