The four basic skills in the english language include: speaking, writing, listening and reading. All of which are equally important. A good lesson will include all four skill sets. This unit focuses on reading and listening skills. One way of teaching these skills is to pre teach any unknown vocabulary and structures before presenting a listening activity such as a music or a video clip.
The topic of the text is also also very important. A teacher should take the time to learn the students interests and use these interests as topics. We can begin to gain students interests by engaging them in a discussion, showing pictures and predicting what the text will be about. Always give a comprehension tasks to promote understanding. In the Activate part of the lesson, the teacher should build from the text and allow the students to work in pairs to promote understanding and confidence.
