In this unit we learned about the two receptive skills, reading and listening. We saw that there are different ways in which we read and listen. This is important to take into account depending on what we want students to do, or which phase of the lesson we are in. In the engage phase a more entertaining oriented text or spoken segment can work well to create interest. In the study phase we might want our students to read with a specific purpose, so that they practice what they are being taught. Understanding these differences well, and knowing how to use them and structure our class around them, will help the students to be more receptive (no pun intended) to what they are learning, and process the information well. To this end, good preperation, such as preteaching certain vocabulary, as well as a good understanding of the current language level of the students, will be essential.
