Teach English in Hoyland - TESOL Courses
Unit 6 is an overview of the Past Tense in English which has four aspects, i.e.; past simple, past continuous, past perfect, and past perfect continuous. The unit covers each aspect in terms of usage, its affirmative/negative/question structures, typical student errors, and suggested class exercises. I was intrigued by the four usages outlined for the past continuous as it seems that this was/is an example of splitting hairs and would most likely be confusing to students of the language. We learn languages naturally through contextual assimilation. The most important aspect for a student to remember about the usage of the 'past continuous\" is contained in its very name; that being its continuous or active and/or ongoing character. Whether or not an action in the past is interrupted, gradually developing, or a description is far less relevant than the overall sense of its ongoing nature.
