Conditional speech refers to the use of ?if? (or a similar word, such as ?when?) in a sentence which refers to past, present or future possibilities. The five conditionals are: zero conditional; first conditional; second conditional; third conditional and mixed conditional. The grammatical structure of each form is provided along with teaching ideas for each conditional. In the section on Reported speech, the important grammatical change is the back-shifting of the tense, as from the present simple to the past simple tense, for instance. Other changes are also described. The reader is warned that there is much scope for students to make errors with this aspect of English, given that there are an enormous number of verb tenses, patterns, questions, pronouns and time expressions. The advice is to proceed slowly! Again several teaching aids for reported speech are described.
