Pronunciation and phonology were the topics covered in Unit 13. Both are integral to teaching English as students simultaneously find them challenging and want to learn them. Intonation, stress, and rhythm add meaning in English, but native speakers don't consciously think about any of these things. For this reason, I believe this unit was challenging and intriguing. The concepts of sound joining and linked speech were things to which I had previously not paid any attention and would have had no idea would help an ESL learner (let alone how to teach them). The IPA was something I had seen before but didn't know; I think it will be helpful not only in teaching English, but in my own language learning efforts. Articulation (place and manner) was also covered in this unit and further adds to the list of clarifying activities a teacher can utilize to help students distinguish between English sounds.
