Challenging unit. Mainly because it reminds you of how much you take the English language for granted, having learned to pronounce basic words and even some complex ones at such a young age. While I know I would articulate clearly in the classroom, I, apparently like some other teachers, don't know if I would have given this much focus to phonetics. Pronunciation, yes, but the IPA, probably not as much, even though it helped me as a child. Watching the classroom demonstration, I couldn't gauge if the students were really picking up on the purpose of learning the phonetic alphabet or not. It was a well-taught class and they were engaged, but until I had more classroom experience and felt comfortable with it (and also better understood the use) I think I would opt for teaching phonetics in smaller doses or as needed rather than focusing whole classes on it - unless, of course, a great need was demonstrated.
