Establishing rapport with students is very important at the start of the course. The teacher may find it easier to connect with an existing group than with a new group in which the students have no prior exposure to EFL learning. Finding out about the students' language level as well as their needs and aspirations with the English language will help the teacher to plan appropriately for the lessons ahead. When faced with students of varying levels in the same class, it might be helpful to pair stronger students with weaker ones so that they can help to clarify some content. However, care should be taken to ensure that the activities are at a language level suitable to the student's ability so that he/she does not have to resort to native language in the classroom. Pair work and role play can give reluctant students time to practice their language skills and build their confidence for further participation.
