The Unit explains the methods of teaching. They can be: 1. Grammar Translation, 2. Audio- Lingualism, 3. Presentation, Practise and Production, 4.Task Based Learning, 5. Communicative Language Teaching, 6. Community Language Teaching, 7. The Silent Way, 8. Suggestopaedia, 9. The Lexical Approach or, 10. The ESA or Engage, Study and Activate plan. The oldest of all the methods is the Grammar Translation, which is still used.
The most common method of teaching these days is the ESA method. The ESA method can be divided into 3 categories: a. Straight Arrow, where Engage is followed by Study and then Activate.
b. Boomerang, where Engage is followed by Activate, then Study and then it is followed by Activate.
c. Patchwork, where it starts with Engage and ends with Activate, there can be any combination of ESA
Whatever the method is chosen to teach, it should be ensured that the students are made comfortable and are encouraged to speak in English.
