Teach English in Norton Radstock - TESOL Courses
This unit covered quite a lot. Pronunciation was the main topic, and it was broken down into intonation (the changes in volume and tone throughout a sentence) Stress (changes in volume or emphasis within words) and phoneme production. The main point of the section on intonation was that much of our meaning when we speak is determined by our intonation, or how we say the words in a sentence. This related directly to the suggested methods for teaching intonation, which included varying intonation to change the meaning of a sentence, using nonsense words to convey emotion or attituded, and encouraging students to speak with expression. Stress was addressed in a more granular way, with descriptions of how to explain stress, and examples of many different stress patterns. Finally, the use of the IPA was encouraged, as it will be encountered by all students when they look up pronunciation in a dictionary and is the same for all dialects of English, unlike our unreliable spelling system.
