This unit examined forms, usage, and instructional activities ideas for the past tenses. As I stated in my reflection for the unit about present tenses, I find it highly instructive to look at grammatical elements from the perspective of a non-native speaker. The unit tasks involving explaining and providing examples of each tense clearly demonstrate how difficult that can be. The first four questions of this test included descriptions of the usage of a tense in sample sentences and I needed to read them more than once in some cases to be certain I understood them. The concepts can sound very abstract in descriptions and I think the importance of good examples and engaging Activate exercises can't be overstated. The Activate idea of using narratives/stories that include all the past tenses would be a challenging activity for a range of students and would present excellent learning opportunities. Students could read, write, mime, and otherwise present stories appropriate to their language levels.
