This unit illustrated how the presentation of the same content can vary significantly and greatly affect a student's ability to learn. In the first lesson, the teacher did not effectively engage the students, nor build on their current skills while introducing new information. He did not smile and was very blunt and intimidating, causing the students to remain silent. He did not know the student's names, and he did not create an environment where the students felt comfortable or encouraged to use the language, which is the entire purpose for studying a language.
In the second class, the teacher smiled, asked for names early in the class, and developed a kind, encouraging rapport with the class. In the engage phase, he designed an activity based on a subject with which the students were familiar (animals), and introduced new animals with pictures and new verbs with gesture and miming. Students participated very much, worked in pairs, and used the language much more than in the first lesson.
