In this lesson on classroom management we learned the skill of organizing the class, the students, and what takes place during the class. How teachers use their eyes, voice, and gestures, along with the physical seating arrangement and having the students working individually and/or in pairs are all factors in maintaining a well run classroom. Various issues were also discussed including handling classroom discipline, but the biggest take-away for me here was that increasing student talk time is the main goal in any language class and any way we organize the classroom or lessons should be with that end in mind. Teacher talk time is, of course important, but needs to be simple, clear and without over elaboration. In the end, while teaching styles may differ, all teachers should inspire confidence in the students. This lesson reinforced the idea that the positive, enthusiastic teacher, who shows enjoyment for their work, is firm yet flexible will create the best learning environment for the student.
