In Unit 17: Equipment & Teaching Aids, I was made aware of typical types of teaching aids and their uses. It is essential to use teaching aids and classroom equipment in order to make lessons more interesting, effective, and less dependent on the textbook. A good teacher will combine the course book with additional materials, activities, or visual aids to help the language point to be understood by the students. Beyond the use of white boards, CDs, and flashcards, I was made aware of using additional materials such as a video camera, online books, or podcasts for listening exercises. Some of these additional materials depend on the host school to provide in the classroom, while some may be prepared by the teacher. As in any other lesson, when using additional materials, the teacher must select information carefully so as to be understood by the students, the additional materials must pertain specifically to the language point, and they be tested to see if they are working properly before the lesson.
