Authentic materials are of particular importance because they can help teach the students culture. When students interact with these materials and understand them they feel a sense of pride that they really are accomplishing something useful outside of the class. It helps them to learn and understand more than just the language they are studying. Another advantage is that these materials are often more interesting than the \"designated\" materials for the class. One advantage for the teacher, is that while authentic materials need to be chosen with care the teacher does not have to invent them from whole cloth. This is good if the teacher needs to create a lot of these, or does not have great skill or creativity.The other type of materials are created materials. These have several advantages to them. They may be tailored specifically to any class. This means that students will find them both interesting and helpful. They can dovetail directly with any material the school is requiring taught. Which is good in the eyes of the school as well.
