For English learners, reading and listening skills are highly essential in order to deduce meaning and understanding of the language. Depending on whether reading and/or listening is for entertainment or to achieve a particular purpose, various specialist skills may be employed in the process, such as scanning written material for specific content or using deduction to elicit meaning from the context of individual words or phrases. It is important that students understand that they do not need to know every single word in a text in order to gain understanding. To encourage confidence in using receptive skills, the teacher should carefully select a mixture of authentic and non-authentic texts for the class. If necessary, the teacher should also pre-teach complex vocabulary to allow students to become more comfortable with the language. The selection of topics and the tasks for the students should also be varied and of interest all students over time. This way, they are more likely to be motivated to engage in the lesson and practice what they have learned.
