Unit 12, teaching productive skills is speaking and writing. First we have speaking, the communicative form of the two verbally. Two main functions to the speaking form, accuracy, and fluency. Accurancy is concentrating on producing the correct language. Such activities are controlled by the teacher to make sure of the language being spoken correctly. Fluency activities allow the students to experiment and be creative with language, where this is seen as being less controlled. However different, they are both equally important, just as listening and reading. These both go hand and hand and play a pivotal role in the learning process. Many students will not want to speak in the classroom, for fear of failure, pronouncing it wrong, lack of confidence, fear of mistakes, peer intimidation, lack of interest within the topic or even cultural reasons. Techniques to encourage this involves pair-work, group-work, change the classroom dynamics, careful planning. When it comes to writing, we look at the handwriting itself, the spelling, layout and punctuation of the word we are trying to write.
