This unit covered intonation, stress, and phonemes. Although I understand that pronunciation and how to form words is very important and critical to speaking English, I though learning the phonemic symbols (and being tested 5 questions on it) was a waste of time. Also, learning about the different parts of articulation was a waste of time. I think the lesson should have approached intonation from a more practical view. Although I understand it is important to have basic knowledge about intonation and articulation so we gain confidence as teachers, I do not think that I will be using the phonemic symbols. I think students of English can gain a lot by imitating a native speaker and listening to them, rather than looking at a list of symbols and feeling overwhelmed. This lesson did not give any worthy practical ideas and suggestions about teaching intonation and articulation. The suggestions were commonplace, such as tongue twisters and drawing on the board. I did, however, appreciate the piece of information about the communicative indications of a falling, rising, or flat tone. I think that is useful to students..
