This unit presented pronunciation and phonology. Phonology include stress, intonation and rhythm in speaking. Intonation can follow a rose/fall, fall/rise, and steady pattern to denote the expectation of the speaker and promote appropriate response from the listener. Stress is emphasis placed on a word to convey meaning. The two simple rules of Stress is that one word has only one stress and only syllable can be stress not individual vowels or consonants. The unit presented examples of stress being placed on the first syllable, the last syllable, the penultimate syllable, the ante-penultimate syllable and compound words. The unit also presented the phonemic alphabet, as well as voiced and unvoiced consonants. Lastly, the unit presented articulation include place of articulation which includes but it not limited to velar, palatal, alveolar as well as manner of articulation which includes but it not limited to plosive, fricative, nasal etc. As always the unit provides teaching tips for introducing phonology to english learners including when to teach pronunciation and how to teach each aspect of pronunciation to a class.
