When we teach pronunciation there are two levels that we need to focus on: the level of the word and the level of the sentence. At the word level it is very helpful for the students to break the words into single phonemes in order to be able to listen for differences and to produce each sound correctly. The phonetic alphabet can be a useful tool in order to know how words should sound as the English spelling can be confusing. Many sounds in English are pronounced differently but spelled the same or vice versa. Word stress is very important as stress on different syllables could result in different meanings. At the level of the sentence, sentence stress is as important as word stress. We emphasize using a stress on the words that carry meaning in our sentence. The same sentence can have a different focus or a different effect on the listener depending the words we choose to stress. In a similar way, the intonation can also change the meaning. The normal pattern in English is a rise/fall pattern but it can change into fall/rise if we expect a response or an answer or if we want to show that the story we're telling is not over.
