This unit is about the receptive skills of reading and listening, why we need them, how we use them and what problems we can have with them. We need receptive skills for different reasons, sometimes to extract important information that we are looking for or might find, sometimes for entertainment and sometimes for both. The thing's we read and listen to are processed by our minds and the pre-existing knowledge we have that will make us truly understand and recognize the meaning of the words we hear or read. This process can become more difficult depending on different factors in the language of the text/topics/tasks we are providing. Problems can arise if sentences/words or the are too long, too complicated or too unfamiliar. This can be minimized by selecting relatable, interesting and variating texts, topics, tasks to boost motivation. Pre-teaching vocabulary helps with any unfimiliarity in the language/topic. Besides that it is important to have different approaches in testing and practicing the receptive skills: playing audiotapes, reading to the class while they listen and read along, having the students read to the class/eachother etc.
