Unit 15 was devoted to the different forms of evaluation we teachers can employ to ascertain our student's language levels. In addition to testing methods described below, material tutorials (with the whole class, or individual students) and student evaluations of how they feel the course is going provide the teachers with an understanding of how well the information is being learned, and what areas of the lessons need improving.
The main types of tests are as follows: placement exams (given before students enter the courses to ascertain their English comprehension level and sort the in the corresponding course), diagnostic tests (similar to placement exams, except given by the teacher after the students have ben placed in a level, before the class starts so the teacher can prepare the appropriate materials to best ensure the students learn everything needed), progress tests (the testing method used to ensure proper material absorption by the students), practice tests (to prepare for external or final examinations), and external examinations (the tests which garner certification for the students in a particular English Language field or level.
