This unit was helpful in many ways. The unit begins with the various methodologies used in teaching ESL such as grammar-translation, audio-lingualism, presentation practice and production, task-based learning, communicative language teaching, community language learning, the silent way, suggestopaedia, and the lexical approach. The unit states that perhaps the most effective method is Jeremy Harmer's ESA ( Engage, Study, Activate) approach. Understanding this approach was helpful for my lesson planning because the unit uses various examples of how to get students engaged in lessons by breaking down the ESA method. The main examples within the unit that are mentioned are the \"straight arrow\", \"patchwork\" and \"boomerang\" approaches. The ideas for the engage phase are very helpful and I have used many of these ideas in my lessons throughout the years. The ideas for the study phase are also helpful and I agree that \"hangman\" was a big hit with some of my younger students in the past. The ideas for the activate phase are also important and helpful. The unit ends with tips on corrections that is a great reminder that mistakes and errors are not the same.
