Past tenses relate to past time periods. All continuous forms feature some form of the verb 'to be' plus the 'ing' form of the verb. If the verb 'to be' is in the present, it will be the present continuous. If the verb 'to be' is in the past, it will be the past continuous. It is also important to note that all perfect forms feature some form of the verb 'to have' and the past participle.Likewise if the verb 'to have' is in the present, it will be the present perfect and if the verb 'to have' is in the past, it will be the past perfect. All perfect continuous forms feature some form of the verb 'to have' plus 'been' plus the 'ing' form of the verb. If the verb 'to have' is in the present, it will be the present perfect continuous whereas if the verb 'to have' is in the past, it will be the past perfect continuous. Teachers need to ensure that they grasp these concepts as it will make their work a little easier as they explain/ teach their students. Teachers should also try and figure out the most common errors and mistakes students are likely to make with the above tenses, so that they figure out away of correcting these errors and mistakes before hand.
