Teach English in Retford - TESOL Courses
Unit twelve discusses the other side of language skills: productive skills (speaking and writing). Writing often gets neglected because it creates ?quiet time? in class, which teachers like to avoid, so it is given as homework that isn?t always completed by students. Writing demands more accuracy and speaking demands more fluency. They are equally important and are used in different lesson stages. There are different speaking activities in the classroom that are based on accuracy or fluency: controlled (accuracy), guided (accuracy with a little creativity), and creative (fluency). These activities require class participation, so it?s important to know why students may be reluctant to speak and how to encourage them to. The other part of productive skills (writing) is usually more formal, but should also include creative writing. Components of writing to be aware of are handwriting, spelling, layout, and punctuation. The final part of this unit discussed games in the classroom and gave two types: competitive and co-operative games. The unit gave examples of different games, but also noted that most games can be adapted for teaching the English language.
