This unit covered the different types of special groups you may encounter as an English language teacher. Each group has specific characteristics which require teachers to adapt their focus and teaching styles. They also have specific issues, such as motivation levels and problems beyond the classroom, that the teacher must take into account. For beginners, teachers should emphasize an open environment in which they are free to make mistakes and should vary their activities to maintain interest. For young learns, teachers should try to be dynamics and positive as possible, since children are usually seeking their teacher's approval and have shorter attention spans. For teaching 1-1 students, teachers have more flexibility, yet they should still utilize techniques used in the classroom, such as pair work activities and using relevant topics to maintain interest. When teaching English to business people, teachers should try to keep the groups' goals, rather than individual goals, as the priority of the lessons. In order to do so, they should conduct a Needs Analysis at the beginning of the course to see what the client's goals are and where they overlap between individuals.
