Once again I am rather amazed by how unfamiliar I am with something I know so well! I can see how conditionals can present problems for learners. Using a past tense to talk about the future in the second conditional, for example, sound write when speaking thus, but sounds wrong when explained. Likewise, deciding between a hypothetical and a real-life condition may at times be difficult so as to know whether to use first or second conditional. Still, I suppose through use and exposure students will become familiar with when to use which conditional. Reporting can also be tricky. For a learner, getting the various tenses down becomes more difficult when realizing that those tenses change when reporting them! And I thought English was an EASY language! Still and all, the suggested methods of teaching these ideas will prove useful. After all we read such reports all of the time in news reports in print and on television. I have spoken English my whole life and, I believe, spoken it with a good deal of accuracy. Yet a few of the question on this exam were even posers for me! Must keep such things in mind to make sure to give special attention to such issues when teaching them.
