Unit 14 deals with coursebooks and lesson materials. Authentic materials are anything written or said in the English language (assuming one is teaching English). Newspapers, radio interviews and magazines are good examples of authentic materials. The advantage with this material is that it is often more relevant to today's world and today's more cosmopolitan student than course books. The disadvantage is that it is not geared to teaching and must therefore be adapted as such. The section covers some created materials, which are created by the teacher specifically for a class, age and level specific. Crosswords and role play cards are amongst my personal favorites because they encourage student participation and creativity. The advantage to course books are that they are usually expected by students, provide a syllabus graded to student level, provides a balanced mix of grammar, vocabulary and skills and continually builds up on lessons previously taught. The disadvantage to course books are that it may not fit the students ability or nationality, can make teacher's lazy and they may be outdated. Overall I found Unit 14 to be very interesting and somewhat informative.
