This unit covered reading and listening skills (receptive skills). It discussed why these skills are used, either for a purpose (e.g. to read instructions and learn how to accomplish something or to know something) or for entertainment (e.g. listening to your favourite song or reading your favourite book). However, when teaching students it is important to include both of these uses. Students should be learning the material you teach, but they should also be enjoying it because this keeps them interested and encourages them to try and learn and also do their best. The unit also discussed how understanding is key to learning, and how promoting understanding is extremely important, rather than just being able to parrot a new learned topic back. For example, the understanding of a topic can be seen through such skills as predicting, skimming, scanning, deducing of texts and audio, and, of course, concentrated reading/listening when the intended goal is to learn detailed information. Ways of making teaching language easier for students is to use such techniques as pre-teaching vocabulary, selecting interesting topics for the students and topics that are of their level of learning.
