This unit expresses four different aspects of the past tenses. 1) Past Simple: Affirmative form - Subject + Past verb(regular or irregular) Past Simple Tense is used for activities happened in the past in a specific time. However, sometimes the time becomes definite as a result of a question and answer in the present perfect. 2)Past continuous: Affirmative form - Subject + was/were + verb+ing It is used for interrupted past actions and actions in progress in the past. This form can also be used to express an action, which began that time and probably continued after it. 3) Past Perfect: Affirmative form - Subject + had + past participle It is used to express an action completed in the past just before another action happened in the past. example: By the time I warned her not to eat, she had swallowed in all. 4) Past Participle continuous: Affirmative form - Subject + had + been + verb+ing It is mostly used by the native speakers as it is a very complex form and can make students confuse while learning the lower level of English language. It is used to talk about longer action in the past that had been going on continuous up to the past moment that we are thinking about and we are not concern with whether or not continued after.
