Teach English in Wooler - TESOL Courses
This unit deals with classroom management. The unit begins with some basic information for teachers such as suggestions for using eye contact, gestures and vocal patterns within the classroom. The unit also mentions that using students names at the end of a question keeps the students involved because they do not know which student will be called to give an answer. Grouping students either as an entire class, individually, in pairs or in groups is also the responsibility of the teacher. Classroom arrangement such as orderly rows, circles and horseshoes, separate tables, and the teacher's position within the classroom is also very important. The unit also gives advice about how and when teachers should write on the board. The section about teacher talk time and student talk time is informative. Giving instructions and establishing rapport with students is discussed within the unit as well. Finally, the unit discusses how to maintain discipline within the classroom and how to prevent problem behavior. I learned something from the responding to problem behavior section that it is often better to let a silent and uncooperative student to stay silent and to try different approaches to getting this student to better participate in the class.
