A student can be a master in English receptive skills and be able to write, but how they speak English is a field that requires extra understanding and experience. The pronunciation of certain words can be difficult to explain universally, but the phonetic system can be used as basis.
Personally, this is my first time to come into contact with any form of phonetics. It is difficult to quickly link sounds to what you see, but it is very reliable and well structured.
Intonation is something that comes naturally, once you understand or \"feel\" the language, but to explain these rules to a non-English speaking learner can be difficult. The techniques for teaching intonation provides insight as to how a teacher can go about teaching intonation, but the teacher must pay close attention as to how he/she \"feels\" the language.
Yet again, stress (and the lack of it) is another part of the language that comes naturally to native English speakers, and this is a clear example of the difference between written and spoken English. Personally, i feel that pronunciation, stress, intonation and articulation is something that comes with experience, even though it can be taught, the more experience; the better you'll be able to fluently speak English.
