There are two kind of material that you can use during your lesson: authentic and created materials. They have advantages and disadvantages. Usually authentic material is not designed for beginners because is not graded for a level, while created material is more difficult to produce especially if the teacher is not really artistically gifted. We should try to balance both materials during our lesson and usually students appreciate more authentic material because is real.
There are other materials that we can use in a class. First of all the resource books ( student book, work book, teachers resource book). Some times we need to replace, omit, supplement or adapt some parts/activities of the course book to suit better the lesson or the students needs.
Other materials that can be helpful are the wipe boar, visual aids (realia), cassette, dvd, cd, video, dictionaries photocopies, computers, etc. We need to prepare all the materials before the beginning of the lesson like check that all the electronic materials are working or plan how to use the board or that the realia are enough big to be seen by everyone.
The most important thing is try to use all this different type of materials to make every lesson intresting and stimulating for the student.
