This unit can be particularly difficult to teach as there are so many different aspects to the present tense. When broken down, the present tense hase twelve different tenses. There are three times (tenses): past, present, and future. Each tense then has four elements: simple, continuous, perfect, and perfect continuous. From reading the material, I believe it is important to have the students speak out loud what they are writing down on paper. It can be difficult to understand why using a certain tense if wrong unless you hear it spoken aloud. Learning tenses focuses a lot on continual use and practice. Tenses also build on each other. For example, to understand the present continuous tense, the students must understand how to use the present simple tense. Without the previous knowledge, it if difficult to explain why they might be making certain errors or mistakes.
Having the students ask each other questions on a specific topic and then having them report back to the teacher is a good way to have them practice using different tenses. It allows them to vocalize the tenses while also analyzing them when writing them down. It allows the students to really think about what their partner is saying instead of just repeating back phrases provided by the teacher.
