Speaking and writing are productive skills and like receptive skills they are used to communicate. A teacher should create a desire for students to communicate and the best way to get students to communicate is through some sort of engaging activity. An activity is most likely to be successful especially if there is a point to it. Accuracy and fluency will carry equal importance when teaching productive skills. Students should be encouraged to speak. Providing a comfortable atmosphere will give students confidence in themselves, they then won't be so afraid to make mistakes or communicate with other students. Make sure to provide positive feedback to the students, focus on how well they did something. Recording activities can help the student and teacher see/hear their mistakes and improve upon them. Common class mistakes can be presented to the class while individual mistakes can be discussed in private. Games are an integral part of learning, they incorporate rules, goals and have an element of fun. There are competitive and cooperative games, both work toward a common goal. They can also be great ice-breakers. Creating a comfortable atmosphere is extremely important for the students and makes a big difference in a students ability to learn and retain information.
