Conditionals are sentences containing 'if' or 'when' which refer to past, present and future possibilities. The 5 main conditionals are zero conditional (refers to actions and facts that are irrefutable; form: if/when+resent tense, present tense), first conditional (talks about a 'real' situation in the future that is possible, probable or certain, once the condition has been satisfied; form: if+present simple, will), second conditional (communicates a present or future 'unreal', hypothetical situation that is presently not true and is unlikely ever to be true; form: if+past simple, would/could/might+base form), third conditional (refers to a hypothetical past action/ non-action and the hypothetical past consequence/result; form: if+past perfect, would/could/might+have+past participle) and mixed conditional (refers to a hypothetical past action or state, and the hypothetical present consequence; form if+past perfect, would+base form). Reported speech and directed speech: tenses changes rules: present tenses are changed to the same past tenses, past simple and past perfect to past perfect, past continuous and past perfect continuous to past perfect continuous, will to would. Pronouns are changed depending on the context. Time expressions are also modified if backshifting.
