Teach English in Raunds - TESOL Courses
This unit provided an overview on pronunciation and phonology and techniques on how to teach these topics. The first two topics covered were Intonation of sentences and the stress of any given word within a sentence. Depending on the intention of what is being said, the manner of intonation and the position of the stress differ. For example if someone wants to ask a question their intonation would fall and then rise towards the end of their sentence and depending on the context of any given sentence the stress could fall on a variety of different places. Typically the normal rule for any statement is a rise/fall intonation. There were several different methods on how to teach these two topics some of them involve gesturing in place of where a stress or intonation should go or by humming sounds to identify where an intonation should fall or rise.
An interestingly engaging part of this unit was the introduction of the phonetic alphabet. A variety of different organs and places of articulation were presented including the hard and soft palates, the alveolar ridge, velars, alveolars, dentals, etc. Some ideas to teach these pronunciations were peer dictation, the teacher using their own mouth as a model on how to position yourself, and visual diagrams of the mouth when given a sound to utter.
