In unit 14 we saw the types of materials used in class and the best way to use course books as well as the advantages and disadvantages of using them. Materials can come from authentic sources (anything a native speaker would read or hear) such as menus, brochures, or newspapers or created sources (created for the teaching English) such as gap-fills, word searches, or role-play cards. Created sources are useful since they can be tailored to the level and interests of the class but authentic sources can also useful in boosting the student?s confidence. A combination of the two types is preferable. Other materials in the classroom can include the wipe board, CDs, DVDs, or dictionaries. It is best to make sure all materials are clean, function well, and not overused. I like the idea of being fully prepared even to the point of adjusting the speaker volume so as not to bother the student?s ears or to prepare a plan for what will be written on the wipe board. Course books are normally expected by students and offer a tested syllabus geared towards a specific level but exclusive use can make the class boring and predictable. Also some of the material may not be interesting or relevant for the class. Therefore, it is best to use the course book but supplement, omit, or adapt materials for the class.
